'The Tibetan model [of the steam-jet fire-blower] still takes the form of a bottle-shaped conical copper kettle surmounted by a bird's head, the beak of which, sometimes quite elongated, points downwards and has a pin-hole at the end. The steam emitted is thus directed on the flame and the hot air carried with it blows the fire up.' Hans Roth was told of this secondary use by Georg S\u00f6derbom, a missionary who accompanied the Sven Hedin Sino-Swedish Expedition in the 1930's to Central Asia. According to him, at the fire place of their camel drivers it was used every night and no calamities happened! FK.\n\nOn his visit to the Horniman (2014-09-12) Hans Roth explained how the addition of a small amount of water in the form of steam was deemed helpful by some Himalayan smiths in metal working.
