            "value": "Neck & grain direction: Unknown. Prob. solid wood. Pillar: Hollow with screwed on cover for ditals (levers). Soundboard: Spruce with edging screwed down. Stringboard: Spruce.  Bracing: No bracing but linings to Soundboard. Large and thickened laminated strip with block for pillar attachment. Covering: three ply laminated beech. Thinned at treble end. 6 no. Sound slots at back graduating from 4 1\/2\" x 1\/2\" to 3 1\/2\" x 3\/8\". Joints: Neck to pillar: Not obvious, covered by brass plate through which tuning pegs and bridge pins were fixed. Neck to body: Inset saddle, half D\/Tail to secure soundboard. Number of strings & tuning: 30 (tuning pins reducing in dia. from 3\/16\" to 1\/8\". Type of bridge pins: Normal. Prob. gilded steel. Type and size of semi-tone system: Fourchette (Erard). Method of tying strings: Pegged into S\/Brd. String looped through hole in base of Rse\/Wh\/Bog Oak peg. Decoration: Gilded shamrock on green. Acanthus spirals to rear of body. Height from top of neck to base of body: 35 1\/2\". Height from lower part of neck to base: 34 1\/2\" (along body). Height of body from saddle (along Sound.): 31 7\/8\". Length of neck: 19 1\/2\". Angle of body to pillar: 70 from base. Width of soundboard at base: 7 1\/2\". Width of soundboard at top: 2 3\/4\". Width of body: 5 1\/2\" to 2\". Depth of body: 7 1\/2\" to 2 3\/4\". Thickness of body covering: 3\/16\" reducing to saddle. Notes and observations: According to the Grove Music dictionary, surviving examples of Egan portable harps have poor tone quality. As the harp is so small this will naturally affect tone and volume. There is also a question as to the advisability of an open end to the base of the body, on such a small harp, as well as sound holes, the combination of both could detract from the tonal response. Thickness and response of soundboard unknown. As Egan is known to have constructed some 2000 harps, without comparison it is difficult to ascertain the comparative quality of this harp. It should be noted that the offsetting of the neck is particularly graceful and adds to the overall appeal of the harp."

The outcurved, hollow column or forepillar has a brass cover enclosing the mechanism for seven hand-levers operated by ivory buttons, bearing the note names from the bottom: D, G, C, E, B, E, A.  They are attached to rods which connect with 27 'fourchettes' ('forks'), swivelling discs on a brass plate in the neck, each with a pair of prongs.  These engage with the string running between them, raising it by a semitone.  The bottom two strings are of wound wire, the rest are gut. Strings 7, 21 and 28, normally sounding F, are black. Strings 11, 14, 18 and 22 normally sounding C, are red, some strings have probably been replaced.  The strings are fixed with pins, probably of gilded steel, onto the spruce string holder or bridge.  The back of the resonator has soundholes in the form of slots. The resonator contains a retractable stick support with a brass foot.   The instrument is painted green with gilt shamrocks, and with acanthus leaf spirals on the back. Brass knob for a carrying strap on the neck."
