            "value": "A tenor trombone with a double slide.  This is a prototype instrument.  It was designed by Eric McGavin to enable students with physical disabilities to be able to play the trombone.  The idea being that the doubled-over slide would require less arm extension to operate.  And McGavin built a special stand that could support this instrument so that a player, with only one arm, could use it.  There is an example of this prototype surviving in the Boosey & Hawkes collection and I\u2019m not certain whether this photo is identical to the prototype that we have or whether it\u2019s a different instrument.  It\u2019s very interesting that in this photo the instrument is quite dirty. It looks like it\u2019s just come out of the workshop and hasn\u2019t been cleaned up yet.  But it would be interesting to compare this with our double slide trombone to see if they are, in fact, the same instrument or if a handful of prototypes were made."
