This is an oral catalogue of the McGavin archive, which relates to the Boosey & Hawkes collection. It gives lots of information about collection history, and object provenance, as well as corporate information about Boosey & Hawkes. I will tell you briefly about how we came to acquire the archive, and then I will give you a brief description of individual items in the archive. \n The McGavin archive acquisition came about through my research into the history of the Boosey & Hawkes collection, and the factory museum. I was particularly keen to ascertain what took place with the collection during the 20th century, as we knew a bit about its foundation by D.J. Blaikley, and we could tell something about its early contents by looking at catalogues such as the Loan Exhibition of 1904, or the Royal Military Exhibition, and seeing what instruments Boosey and Hawkes owned, and what they lent for that exhibition . You can read more about the history of the collection in my article in Florence Getreau\u2019s Musique, Images, Instruments. However, the latter part of the 20th century we know very little about the collection after the 1930 list drawn up by Chatwin, and before Anthony Baines\u2019s 1972 catalogue, when the museum was re-displayed in new showcases, and a in new space. \n The note that led me to think who Eric McGavin was was a brief message in the Preface of Baines\u2019s catalogue, which talks about how sad he was that Eric McGavin wasn\u2019t able to see his museum child, and the new display. So that made me think that Eric McGavin must have been quite important to the life of the collection. Enquiries to the present staff of Boosey & Hawkes at the time of the acquisition (by the Horniman Museum) didn\u2019t yield any information about Eric McGavin or about the collection\u2019s life during the mid-20th century. However, discussions with clarinet players, particularly Hale Hambleton and Victor Slaymark, revealed that Eric McGavin was employed by Boosey & Hawkes from 1950 to 1970, and he was initially hired to work in the clarinet finishing and tooling room as a successor to Brian Martin Myer. Eric McGavin was also very passionate about music education, and he went on to craft for himself the role of education advisor to Boosey & Hawkes. Another one of his roles at this period was to act as curator for the Boosey & Hawkes collection. Victor Slaymark and Hale Hambleton gave me contact details for Andy McGavin, who is a horn player and who was Eric McGavin\u2019s brother. I contacted Andy McGavin, and he put me in touch with Kim McGavin, who was Eric McGavin\u2019s son, and is also in a sense the family historian.
