            "value": "Because the shell of Oxynoticeras was not very wide and had a sharp edge, it offered little resistance to the water. This made it one of the fastest moving ammonites. It propelled itself backwards through the water with squid-like tentacles that came out of its shell. The spiral shell was divided into chambers and the creature lived only in the outermost chamber. The other chambers were filled with gas or water to control buoyancy, rather like a submarine.\n\nVery few Ammonite fossils have been found with remains of food inside them but from the evidence available it seemed they were carnivores (meat eaters), eating fish, other molluscs and plankton. It caught its food with  a ring of tentacles around its beaked mouth. It had a strong mouth capable of crushing shell. It is thought to have lived between 1-2 years before reaching maturity, breeding and dying. The female is believed to have been between 25 \u2013 400% larger than the male and often of very different appearance. Hatchlings were very small, sometimes less than 1mm, but grew very rapidly.\n\nAmmonites were sea creatures living in shallow water of 100 metres or less.\n\n{PLACE: The Ammonite has been extinct for 65 million years so you can only see its remains in fossil form.
