            "value": "These string puppets from Rajastan are known as Kathputli. The head is carved from wood & painted; the arms and body are usually of stuffed rags and there are no legs. The puppets have high-pitched voices, created by speaking through bamboo and rubber reeds known as Boli. The traditional play involves a hero, Amar Singh, and several trick puppets such as the drummer, the juggler, the horse rider, the snake-charmer and the mask-maker with 2 faces - male & female. The performance is accompanied by music on drums & percussion."

Kathputli puppets have no legs but instead they have long skirts often made of colourful decorated cloth. The puppet heads and torso are usually made of mango wood and their arms are stuffed with cloth, the hands contain no joints unlike other puppets of India. The puppets have no legs as the lower body is covered in long, gathered skirts, based on the medieval Rajasthani style of clothing from the Emperor's court. The skirts are made of light materials, bordered and weighted with gold or silver cloth. The puppets wear swords, turbans, crowns, beards and moustaches in accordance with their importance in life. The sutradhar, the main puppeteer, is accompanied by the bhagavat (narrator-singer) who is always a woman and usually his wife, an assistant, and musicians for the drums, cymbals and the harmonium. During performances the sutradhar manipulates puppets by black strings attached to their fingers from above and which do not show up against the black back cloth. He speaks through a \"boli\", a type of split bamboo whistle, to give the puppets their shrill voices, and plays the \"ghungroo\" bells.  Plays are normally narrated by the female bhagavat of the group who also sings ballads and drums that coordinate with the movement of the puppets.         "option1": "Over the last 15 years, the Kathputli shows have become less popular and the puppets have been made mainly for use in the tourist industry.\nHowever there has been a recent return of Kathputli shows set in motion by academics wishing to keep this important cultural performance style alive. Supported by government funding, shows now tour all over India promoting themes such as HIV\/AIDS awareness, family planning, disability awareness, the environment, conservation, literacy, the welfare of rural women, communal harmony and farming.  \n\nThe puppeteers now perform in schools, community centres, homes, courtyards, villages, slums dwellings as well as at fairs and festivals. They also run workshops for students, teachers, health professionals and voluntary agency workers to teach them how puppetry can be an important tool to help people learn and give important messages.\n\nCan you think of any puppets you know that are used in the same way?",
