A template is used as a guide for cutting the outline of the puppet and chisels with differently shaped cutting edges are used to make delicate patterns.  The puppet is painted identically on both sides according to fixed rules.  Next the arms are attached and the central support and control sticks are fitted.  These are made from bamboo or buffalo horn.  The facial features and decoration identify the character of each puppet.The Javanese puppeteer, the dalang, presents the show, manipulates the puppets, speaks the dialogue and conducts the gamelan orchestra.  The stories are from the Hindu epics Mahabharata and Ramayana and characters include gods, heroes, villains, giants, demons, clowns and animals."
