These priests often told stories about the Catholic saints. They also told stories of Spanish history concerning battles that happened in Spain between the Spanish Catholics and the Moors from North Africa. In these battles, the Moors lost their power to the Spanish armies. Masks were used to act these stories out. The Spanish wanted the Mexican Indian communities to know this story so that they would feel that the Spanish army was powerful. Just as they had fought the Moors and driven them out of Spain, the Spanish expected to control the different Indian groups in Mexico. Because of this, dance masks showing the faces of the Moors were sometimes changed and replaced with faces that looked more like the local Mexican Indians."
