            "value": "There are around 3,000 species of lizards in the world today.  Lizards first appeared around 200 million years ago, evolving alongside dinosaurs.  Lizards are found on all continents apart from Antarctica.  THe smallest lizard known is Virgin Islands Gecko, which averages 3.6cm in length. The largest lizard is Indonesian Komodo dragon, which is over ten feet long and can weigh over 165 kg. \nNot all lizards look like the one shown here: the slow worm is a legless lizard and looks like a snake, and the horned toad, despite both its name and appearance, is not a toad but also al izard. \n \nLizards are known to use different methods to ward off predators: for example some American horned lizards inflate themselves with air and expel it to make a loud hiss.  Some can squirt blod from their eyes to irritate the predator's eyes.  The AUstralian frilled lizard puts up a ruff-like collar from a large flap of loose skin around its neck and thrashes around if threatened.  Other lizards prefer to defend themselves than attack.  For example the chameleon hides itself by changing its skin colour to match its suroundings, whilst the armadillo lizard curls up into a tight ball. Some lizards have special abilities: the basilisk lizard can walk on water for short distances, whilst other lizards can parachute through the air using flaps of stretched skin on their bodies to act as 'wings'.   \n \nAlthough most lizards live on the ground, some live in trees, underground or in water.  Lizards eat both plants and animals. \n \nLizards are reptiles which means they are scaly-skinned abd cold-blooded animals.  Their young, from the moment they hatch from their eggs, look like miature versions of their parents. \n \nAll lizards have sensitive tongues that they use to taste chemical particles in the air.  This can help them to find pey, a mate and to detect enemies."
