            "value": "In the spring, female swifts mate in the air with the males.  Afterward females usually lay two or three eggs about two days apart and around 5 to 15 days.  The nest is made of saliva, feathers and small twigs. Both parents keep the eggs warm and after around 19 days, the eggs begin to hatch. The  chicks are fed insects and they are kept warm by their parents until they are ready to fly or 'fledge' after about six weeks. \n\nThese chicks can fly straight away without practice and from the moment they launch themselves by 'dropping' off the lip of the nest, they then might be airborne for up to three years before choosing a mate and a nest site for themselves. They do not return to the nest they were born in to mate."

        "option1": "Swifts now mostly build their nests in holes or crevices in roofs, tiles or the stonework of older buildings. Newer and better insulated buildings do not have as many of these spaces unless the designers are aware enough to make sure that they are built in specially. Much of the re-roofing work that happens on old buildings is done in spring. This is the same time when the swifts have laid their eggs. So despite swifts and their eggs being legally protected, many nests are likely to be destroyed as a result of this re-roofing. However designing in nesting sites or adding nesting boxes to newer buildings can help.  Does this account for the numbers of swifts in Britain dropping by 20% in the last 10 years?  Is anything happening to their warmer feeding grounds in the south that means fewer swifts are coming back each year?  To protect crops from insects, chemical sprays have been used which have now entered the food chain. Chemical sprays can cause birds to lay eggs with shells that have softened. Soft shells means that the chicks are not protected and so they die. Many other types of human pollution may also enter the food chain and affect animal lives such as the swifts or the insects they feed on.       During bad weather, swifts will fly closer to the ground making it difficult to avoid hitting cars.  The swift's agility and dependability as a sign of spring has inspired humans over hundreds of years to write about them in stories and legends (See Connected Stories).",
