He is very easily distinguished from other duck species by his dark green head and neck, white collar, and curly black upper tail feathers. In the summer, the male moults, loses his colour, and then resembles the brown female except for his yellow beak.

They usually breed at sexual maturity, 12 months, but older females are more successful mothers. They bond as pairs in October and the mating season continues until March when most males leave. The female nests on the ground near water. After 26-28 days, the ducklings hatch and they are led to water by the female who returns to the nest no more.

Their breeding population in Britain is estimated to be 100,000–130,000."

They also ’up end’ themselves to feed as far down as their necks will reach. They will also feed from humans, taking bread or seeds. If near farmland they will glean the fields for grain from crops.
Females lay 9-13 eggs per season which hatch after 26-28 days of incubation. Mallards are ready to breed at approximately 1 year old.
The male displays his colourful plummage to the female. He is very easily distinguished from other duck species by his dark green head and neck, white collar and curly black upper tail feathers. In summer the male moults, loses his colour, and then resembles the brown female except for his yellow beak. They usually breed at sexual maturity, 12 months, but older females are more successful mothers. They bond as pairs in October and the mating season continues until March, when most males leave. The female nests on the ground near water. The ducklings hatch after 26-28 days then the female leads them to water and they do not return to the nest.
There breeding population in Britain is estimated to be 100,000 - 130,000.",
