This is because it will become stiff and begin to rot. Preparing animal skins and making clothing has always been a job for women and from the earliest possible age, girls would be taught the skills.

First the fat is removed with a scraper similar to this one. Then the inner layers of skin, called the dermis, is also scraped off. Next the skin is stretched to make it more flexible. It is either pegged out on the ground or on a wooden frame. It is washed and scraped several times to make it very soft before it is hung in the shade to dry.

Skins used for boots or for lightweight clothing are 'dressed' before tanning. That is to say, the fur is scraped away from the skin. Skins are sewn together using needles made from bone and thread made from animal sinew. The sinew swells to fill the holes made by the needle and the seam becomes watertight."

As women spent much of their time sitting to prepare food and make clothing the long back flap was used as a sort of cushion. The woman’s jacket also differed from the man’s because it had a larger hood to protect the baby, carried on her back, against the cold wind. Men, who spent most of their time hunting had shorter jackets for easier movement and the hoods were tighter fitting so as not to block their field of view. Boots, called Kamik, were made from dressed skin which means that all the fur had been scraped off. At the coldest time of year Inuits wore two layers of clothing. The inside layer was worn with the fur against their skin and the outer layer with the fur on the outside, this also included their boots and mittens."

"option1": "Scrapers like this one are no longer made or used. There are very few Inuit people now who live a traditional hunting lifestyle and those who do are hunting with modern tools and equipment.

Does it matter to you that many traditional lifestyles, skills and traditions are now in decline worldwide?
If people want to change their lifestyle, should they not be allowed to do so? Perhaps just a few people should demonstrate their lifestyle and crafts, maybe in a museum, to explain it to visitors? What do you think?",
"option2": "This scraper was made by the Inuit people and fashioned entirely from natural materials. The handle is made from animal bone and the blade is shaped from stone. Metal blades were introduced later by trade with Europeans, often at whaling stations where iron was available. Although tools like this scraper were usually made by men, they were only used by women since preparing animal skins was only work for women and girls

Once the skin was removed from the animal, Seal and Caribou were commonly used, it had to be treated quickly, within hours during the summer and within a few days in winter. This is because it would become stiff and begin to rot. Preparing animal skins and making clothing was always a job for women and from the earliest possible age girls would be taught the skills. First the fat was removed with a scraper similar to this one. Then the inner layers of skin, called the dermis were also scraped off. Next the skin was stretched to make it more flexible. It was either pegged out on the ground or on a wooden frame. It was washed and scraped several times to make it very soft then hung in the shade to dry. Skins used for boots or for lightweight clothing were ‘dressed’ before tanning. That is to say the fur was scraped away from the skin. Skins were sewn together using needles made from bone and thread made from animal sinew. The sinew swelled to fill the holes made by the needle and the seam became watertight.",
