The Herero people living in Botswana today are descended from refugees who fled Namibia following the Battle of Waterberg in 1904.\nThe Battle of Waterberg was the final battle in a longstanding conflict between the Herero and the German colonists in Namibia.\nThe Germans issued an \u2018Extermination Order\u2019 against the Herero and implemented a plan to ensure that there would be no survivors after the battle. They allowed only one escape route which led into the Kalahari desert where they had poisoned all the water wells. They set up machine guns to prevent the Herero from returning from the desert and so the choice was to die of thirst or by machine gunfire. Despite this some Herero people were able to cross the desert and arrived in Botswana with their leader Chief Maherero.\nThese events have gone done in history as \u2018The Forgotten Genocide\u2019.", "option2": "Scraps of cloth are packed into plastic bags to form the head, limbs and torso of these dolls. Long strips of cloth are then wound around these shapes to form the outer \u2018skin\u2019 of the doll. Larger pieces of fabric are then cut and sewn on to show the traditional clothing. The herero lady wears a cotton full skirted dress, apron and matching head cloth. This style was introduced to the Herero by German missionaries in the 19th century. The Himba lady is dressed in a fringed suede apron and cape. The Himbas continued a semi nomadic life and had less contact with missionaries and so their traditional dress is made from animal skins. These dolls were made by Herero people who are a small ethnic minority in Botswana. The Herero in Botswana are descended from people who fled from Namibia, across the Kalahari desert, in 1904. The Herero originally migrated into Namibia from East\/Central Africa in the 17th and 18th centuries. They were Bantu speaking cattle herders who first settled Kaokoland in the North of Namibia before splitting into 2 smaller groups. One group stayed in the North and became known as the Himba people and the other group continued further south.
