Calabashes are quite delicate so some modern bowls are made from fibre-glass. Mbira usually has metal jingles attached and these are often metal bottle-tops. These vibrate with the instrument to give a buzzing quality to the music. This 'fuzzy' sound is common in lots of African traditional music.  \n \nAlthough the mbira is now used as entertainment for a general audience, its primary use was in religious rituals to praise and communicate with the ancestors."
