        "use": "The optimum temperatures for cotton growth range between 15\u02daC for germination, to around 30\u02daC for the plant to fruit. If there is too much rain or the climate is too humid this may make the plant rot, or not develop properly.\n\nThe long silky fibres that are so useful to us to make cotton fibre are there to help the seed be easily carried in the wind, and therefore help the seed spread further and more easily, and improve the planets chance of reproduction. \n\nGossypium hirsutum is the most widely cultivated species of cotton because it tends to produce more and better quality cotton than other varieties. The world\u2019s largest cotton producers are China and United States.",

        "option1": "Cotton is the raw material used to make 40% of all our textiles and so is one of the most important and widely used natural materials in the world. The seed fibres are strong and flexible, and when twisted lock together well, making them very easy to spin and therefore popular for weaving. Archaeological evidence shows us cotton has been cultivated by people for thousands of years, in both the Americas, Africa and Asia. Cotton yarns, fabrics and fishing nets from around 6,000 years ago have been found in Coastal Peru, and in Africa and India there are cotton finds which are about 4,500 \u2013 5,000 years old. Culturally weaving had, and still has great importance all around the globe, and often the best fabrics and textiles could only be worn by emperors and the ruling classes.\n\n\nCotton quickly became very a important trade item, and as the world industrialised methods of production changed. Instead of small-scale growth, mixed in with other plants it became large scale industrial monoculture production.\n\nIt is a massive industry, and has massive environmental and social impact. Harsh pesticides and fertilisers are used to kill disease and improve growth. Chemicals which make the leaves drop off are also used to make harvesting easier. These chemicals end up in water supplies, affecting plants, aquatic life and water supplies for animals and people. These not only negatively affect the environment, but also the health of millions of cotton workers all over the world, in all stages of production. Also many cotton products that we buy have been made by people in sweat-shop conditions, sometimes by children and often people who are paid very little. \nOne alternative is to grow organic, fair-trade cotton. This means cotton grown without synthetic fertilisers and pesticides and that people involved in the industry are paid a fair wage and have decent working conditions.  \n\nCotton first came to Europe from the East, and by the early 16th century Britain was a regular importer. As industry grew the demand for the raw material grew and grew. Britain imported heavily from India, and this trade helped Britain become a rich and powerful country in this age of Empire. However as with all colonial history the trade was not a fair one. Britain bought the raw material cheaply from India, manufactured it in Britain and then sold the finished cloth back to India for much, much higher prices. The conditions in the British factories were also poor, with people (often children) working long hours in terrible conditions\n\nCotton was also one of the products grown in Americas using enslaved people. Between 1500 \u2013 1900 Europeans forcibly uprooted millions of Africans and transported them across the Atlantic to America and the Caribbean in terrible conditions. Many people died on the journey, through illness, bad treatment or suicide and many more died in the terrible conditions in which they were forced to work on massive plantations. These plantations grew crops such as sugar, tobacco, coffee and cotton. These products were exported and sold back in Europe. The slave trade was abolished in 1807 and slavery was abolished in 1834.",
        "option2": "There are about 50 different species of cotton and they vary greatly in size and shape \u2013 some can grow into trees up to 5 metres high, and some are small and shrub-like. However they all follow the same growing process.   The plant start from a seed, which then grows up into a plant. This plant then produces buds, flowers and finally a fruit develops called a boll. This fruit or boll is full of seeds from which the cotton fibres will grow. When the boll is ripe than it bursts open and the cotton dries out and fluffs up until it's mature and ready for harvesting. If not harvested then the seeds will be picked up by the wind, and the whole process may start over again! The fibres used by humans are from the seed of the cotton plant. Soft fibres grow around the seed and they can be spun and woven into cloth."
