Purchased on 20 August 1986 by the Director in Kyoto, Honshu, Japan and presented to the Musical Instrument Department. Purchase price 715 Japanese yen (\u00a32.70). Label: 'TOMBO. PITCH. INSTRUMENT. E.' with stylised Chinese phoenix (ho-ho bird). A brass disc with 12 free reeds is enclosed by a saucer-shaped plastic case, with 12 blow-holes extending from its edge. Gives a chromatic scale starting on a1. The phoenix may be featured to indicate the connection of the instrument with the sho. Diameter: 73 mm, Depth: 15 mm. New and in good condition."

            "value": "Pitch pipe, mouth blown free reed instrument. A circular brass disc incorporating chromatically pitched free reeds, from E4(?) to E5(?). The disc is enclosed in a plastic case, which is circular with convex sides and has thirteen mouth holes extending from around the rim. A circular laminated label on the front face has a logo with a stylised fenghuang (phoenix) at the centre surrounded by three concentric circles of lettering. The innermost reads: E.TOMBO.PITCH.INSTRUMENT; the middle gives the note names of the chromatic scale in capital letters with 'E' appearing twice. The outer ring gives numbers associated with each of the mouth holes and letter names. Number 1 corresponds to A and number 12 to G sharp. There are two '8's, to correspond to two 'E's. One '8' appears within a circle. The phoenix may be featured to indicate the connection of the instrument with the sho. Diameter: 73 mm, Depth: 15 mm. New and in good condition."
