            "value": "An ensemble of Yoruba bata drums, (conical double-membrane drums) made by Alhaji Ayanlere Areilu (\"Ayan\"-the drumming family Ayan, \"lere\" - 'drumming is profitable', \"Areilu\" - king of the drummers) made in the Ile Areilu Ogan quarter, Okeho, Oyo State, Nigeria in the summer of 1990. The wood used is omo wood, carved by Salu Ayantola at Ilero, 2 to 3 km from Okeho, to the order of Alhaji Ayanlere Areilu. The heads are of antelope hide. Both ends of each drum have two membranes, the upper one cut away to leave an outer ring. The heads are indirectly braced with antelope-hide thongs in a mesh pattern. Lengths of antelope hide are wound over the bracing in the lower section of the shell. The three small drums bound together, omele'ako, omele'abo and abigbeyin omele (M13-1992) would by played vertically and struck with two beaters, while the other drums would be played horizontally, with the player striking the smaller head with the beater held in his left hand and the larger head with his right hand. Commissioned from the drum maker by Keith Nicklin, who supplied much of the above information, the instruments' local names, and the following comment: Completed drums should have bells attached to them; Archival material relating to these drums currently in the Ethnography department. Local name of the highest pitched drum \"Omele'ako\", local name of the lowest pitched drum \"Omele'abo\", local name of the drum of middle pitch \"Abigbeyin omele\" - \"last born of the Omele family\". The Omele'ako and Omele'abo drums have small patches of black wax in the centre, presumably for tuning. Printed cotton carrying strap bearing the legend \"ROYAL EAGLE\". Omele'ako - length: 290 mm, diameter: 165 mm. Abigbeyin omele - length: 245mm, diameter 145 mm. Omele'abo - length: 260 mm, diameter: 135 mm. . M13a-1992 Antelope hide beater length: 279 mm. Two of the top heads of each drum have a small black wax tuning patch at the centre. Antelope hide lacing stitched through the skins links both heads of each drum.  It is wound around the lower ends of the shell, concealing the lacing of the membranes towards the distal end. A printed cotton carrying strap bears the legend: ROYAL EAGLE.
