Listed in large (illustrated) Bull catalogue as 115. Joseph Bridge, the organist to whom the instrument belonged, 1853-1929 (see http:\/\/www.churchmusic.org.uk\/cathmus\/chester.php also entry in Grove 5th edition).  This instrument may be based on the 18th century pibgorn illustrated in (Canon) Francis W. Galpin's  book Old English Instruments of Music (plate XXXV), (London, 1910) which at the time of publication belonged to the Royal Society of Antiquaries (ibid p.171) (MB 5 Dec. 2008)."

            "value": "Pibgorn, cylindrical clarinet. A cane pipe with six, oval shaped finger holes and one thumbhole burnt in. The proximal end has a conical reed cap formed from a section of cream-coloured cow horn. This houses the narrow cane reed-bearing tube, which slots into the top of the body. The tube is closed at the top and has an idioglottal upcut reed. A bell is attached to the lower end of the body made from a piece of black cow horn. The bell angles upwards by approximately 45 degrees at an orientation offset to the player's left. The rim is evenly serrated and has a U-shaped cut-out at the front. There are brass ferrules where the tenons fit into the horns at each end of the body."

            "value": "The pibgorn is a single reed instrument that was played in Wales until the 18th century. This example is a replica that may have been modelled on an example in the collection of the Royal Society of Antiquities (illustrated in 'Old English Instruments of Music' by Francis Galpin 3rd 1910, plate XXXV). It was formerly owned by Joseph Bridge (1853-1929). Bridge was the organist of Chester Cathedral for almost fifty years. He also founded the Chester Music Society and resuscitated the Chester Music Festival and, as the 1954 edition of the Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians explains, 'his influence on the city's music was for its good'."
