Advised that the joint at the bottom, which serves as the tip of the walking stick, be removed from the body of the instrument and wrapped separately (but to remain in the same box), since the fit was tight and the 'bell' of the clarinet was cracked. Also advised the same about the sword since the top of the clarinet is also cracked. Correspondence with Al Rice and Bob Savage (Royal Armouries) suggests that this instrument may be unique. (But see M15.10.48\/121, swordstick flute.) There is no agreement on the dating of the clarinet. Savage thinks the sword could be mid-19th century. Rice thinks the clarinet could be from earlier in the century. There is some paper or parchment pushed or stuck inside the 'bell' of the instrument. There appears to be writing on this and may be interesting to remove. This should be undertaken with the assistance of conservation. \nThe paper has now (25 Aug 2015) been removed, and although there is writing, there is not much of it and what remains it is not intelligible. The instrument has been re-packed in a custom-made plastizote frame and placed in a drawer with a see-through lid so that it can be viewed."

            "value": "Musical instruments that serve multiple purposes have a long and well-documented history, and many survive. Examples on display in the Horniman Music Gallery include  the sewing or jewel box virginals (M29.3.61\/1), the writing desk virginals (L2013.37.15), the walking stick flute (14.5.47\/320), and the swordstick flute (M15.10.48\/121), but the musical collection also includes others not on display: for example, this swordstick clarinet, a walking stick (or dancing master's) fiddle (M15.10.48\/14), a walking stick harmonica or mouth organ (M19.9.59\/1), and a truncheon flute (M15.10.48\/123). \n\nMusical instruments that also served as weapons are considered rare, and this swordstick clarinet may be unique.\n\nThe attraction of a walking stick instrument was its convenience and portability. It meant that music could be enjoyed in impromptu settings and outdoors. The fashion for multi-purpose instruments began to wane as the 19th century drew to a close."
