Vol. XV, No.3, July, 1950. p.129-130. ill. pl. 2F: pp.129-30: 'But the most astonishing of my stringed instruments is undoubtedly the seven-stringed harp. It is an angular harp having the stings in the angle between the head and the handle. The head is leather covered, burring being achieved by small copper rings. The strings are attached to a small wooden bridge and joined at the other end to tuning pegs in the handle. This is the only instrument found in Nigeria which is tuned with pegs. The most astonishing thing about the instrument is this: although it is almost the most advanced type of instruments in the country both to make and to play, according to the generally conceived idea of the evolution of musical instruments, yet it is played by the Birom Pagans who accompany it with the extremely crude and primitive scraper'."
