            "value": "The Yamaha DX-7 was the most popular digital synthesizer of the 1980s.  After its launch in 1983 around 160,000 were sold worldwide. Its appeal lay in the quality and variety of its sounds.  They were more realistic than those on the analogue synthsizers with which it was in competition. Virtually all pop acts of the mid-1980s used the DX-7.  Its electric piano sound, based on the Fender Rhodes model, is still popular with musicians, and has been imitated by other manufacturers."

One significant feature of the DX7 was its role in changing the nature of music in London's West End theatres from the 1980s onwards. It was the first keyboard that could produce sounds of sufficient range to emulate the sound timbres of an entire orchestra and this led to the possibility of replacing the orchestra of the theatre pit with a small band of two or three keyboard players."
