Lot 126 Sotheby's Musical Instrument Sale 22 May 1986 Purchased with a grant of \u00a3400 (50% of the hammer price) from the Victoria & Albert Museum Purchase Grant Fund. Description\/Commentary for web catalogue predates edits by Graham Wells.  Formerly in the collection of Henri Van Hees, who acquired it during a holiday in Poland in 1966 from the CEPELIA shop of Warsaw. CEPELIA specialised in Polish folk art and was the channel for craftsmen to sale their products. Jan Kawulok, the maker of the gajdy, was a bagpipe-maker with an excellent reputation. The instrument was brand new when it was acquired and probably only played by its maker for testing it. Henri and Dr Jean-Pierre Van Hees were thus the only players of this bagpipe, before it entered in the collection of the Horniman, in 1985. The name of this type of bagpipe 'Gajdy istebnia\u0144skie' was provided by Wiebe Stodel on 2019-11-01, who also advised us that the maker's nickname is \"uod Wojtosza\", and that he is the most famous bagpipe manufacturer of the region."
