            "value": "Long-necked lute: Shamisen. Tokyo, Japan, circa 1920. The body is a square frame of wood (red sandlewood?) with a skin, possibly catskin, table and back, the white plastic bridge is a replacement. A leather strip covered with floral cloth is attached to the neck and spike; it covers the side of the instrument nearest the bass string, protecting the players clothing. The neck is in three sections; the finial surmounted by a black leather cap. Three fluted wooden pegs; three yellow silk strings. Overall length: 97.6 cm. In excellent condition. The donor never used a plectrum to play this instrument, and considered it to be not of top quality, but to be a 'practice' shamisen. Skin table is a replacement, as the original split."
