M20-1980)\nAcquired: Bought by Mrs Jenkins in 1973 for \u00a33.80\nKota Bahru, Malaysia\nGoblet drum, gedumbak.\nThe shell of the drum is carved from a piece of wood.\nThe leather head is bound into position by split cane.\nUsed in the band of the shadow theatre."

            "value": "Gedumbak, goblet-shaped drum. Turned wooden body (probably of jackfruit, Artocarpus heterophyllus) with a curvilinear stem, which widens slightly to a foot. The upper part of the body is a wide bowl, which constricts at the top to form a curved rim. The hide membrane covers the rounded part of the rim. String laced through holes around the edge of the head is looped around split canes braced to a wooden ring at the base of the bowl.The cord shoulder strap is knotted at each end to secure it to metal hooks at the top and bottom of the drum."

The opposite end is open, and different sounds can be produced by covering it with the left hand. The drum traditionally forms part of an instrumental ensemble that accompanies theatrical performances and is also used in the wayang kulit shadow puppet theatre."
