            "value": "Necked lute: local name charango. Made by Mario Torres, Estancia Macha-macha, near Pocoata (Pukwata), prov. Chayanta, dept. Potosi, Bolivia, c.1987. Purchased on 20th February 1987 by Henry Stobart, price 12.5mil. pesos. Pocoata-type charango. Wooden waisted body with rounded back painted green. The table with palmette inlay at the centre-base and purfling of red, green and brown stained woods; circular sound hole, tie bridge. Wooden finger-board with 12 metal frets, 2 holes on either side of the base of the finger-board for ? capo-tasto. 10 rear-entrant pegs for 5 double courses of metal strings. In the past the instrument was made from an armadillo shell, and the shape of the animal's carapace and head is retained in the rounded back with triangular shaped projection overlapping the back of the fingerboard. This type of charango, with metal strings is played by the campesinos, subsistence farmers, while the cholos, villagers with connections with the large towns, favour a type with nylon strings. It is played using a strumming technique. The charango is comparatively rare in S. Potosi. length overall: 63.4 cm. width overall: 16.5 cm. One string broken."
