            "value": "Purchased Sotheby's Musical Instrument Sale, London, 17 November 1994, Lot 96.  Carl Dolmetsch (November 1994) reported that the first recorders built by Arnold Dolmetsch played at A=405Hz\nEmail from Andrew Mayes to MWaitzman of 7 August 2019: \"Your advice to contact Graham Wells has proved very helpful. He responded immediately and sent a copy of the appropriate page of the [Sotheby's] catalogue and a photograph. The brief note about the instrument quotes directly from Margaret Campbell\u2019s account of the loss of the Bressan and AD\u2019s work to replace it. Importantly, it states that M24-1994 was given by Dolmetsch to Ethel Kibblewhite around 1921. She was Diana Poulton\u2019s mother, and Graham thinks it is likely eventually to have gone to auction through that connection and not the Dolmetsch family. Because of privacy rules he is not able to confirm any further detail than this, but the fact that the recorder had already been given away in 1921 would have prevented it from being given to Geoffrey Rendall if, as I suspect, the original Bressan was not found and returned until after that date.\"\n\nAndrew Mayes came to examine and photograph the instrument on 13th November 2019. He found his photos unuseable for his purposes. MW took a few photos and edited them (using Photoshop Elements) and they are of better quality and contain more detail and information. These can be found in the 'Individual Instruments' folder in Mimi Waitzman on the T:\/\/ drive. In close up the instrument clearly is an old one. I'd be inclined to date it 1922: Andrew Mayes quotes an Arnold Dolmetsch diary entry for 11 January 1923 saying that he sold Mrs Kibblewhite a recorder that day. But slight re-dating, even if you accepted it, wouldn't be at all incompatible with the instrument's being no. 1 in Dolmetsch's for-sale rather than experimental series.\nARNOLD \/ DOLMETSCH \/ 1 is very like the original Bressan to look at; but if the original Bressan had made its way back to Dolmetsch by 1921 (entirely possible) then the similarity is readily explained.\""
