            "value": "Sarangi. Acquired: ex-V & A 1624-1872. India, Orissa; 19th century. Made from one piece of wood, the instrument is of club shape. The body is waisted at the front, while the bottom bout has a violin-like shape. The back has a double groove cut into it. The neck follows the contraction of the body, and 11 pegs, tipped with bone enter from the left. The square pegbox carries three lateral pegs, two entering from the right. The finial is a rounded continuation of the front of the pegbox. The finial, pegbox and fingerboard are all decorated with an outline of black wood and bone. There are incised lines around the edges of the neck and pegbox. The bridge is slightly arched, and the strings are attached to a pierced comb at the end of the instrument. A parchment membrane is glued over the front of the body. Case label: SARANGI. 19th century. Orissa."

Square pegbox. 3 playing strings, 9 sympathetics (pegs on neck). Bridge slightly arched.\nIndia, Orissa, 19th century. Made from one piece of wood, the instrument is of club shape. The body is waisted at the front, while the bottom bout has a violin-like shape. The back has a double groove cut into it. The neck follows the contraction oft eh body, and 11 pegs, tipped with bone enter from the left. The square pegbox carries three lateral pegs, two entering from the right. The finial is a continuation of the front of the pegbox. The finial, pegbox and fingerboard are all decorated with an aoutline[sic] of black wood and bone. The 9 sympathetic strings emerge through holes in the neck bushed with bone. There [are] incised lines around the edges of the neck and pegbox. The bridge is slightly arched, and the strings are attached to a pierced comb at the end of the instrument. A parchment membrane is glued over the front of the body. Case label: SARANGI \/ 19th century. Orissa.\ng. V&A acc.no.1624.1872. Sarangi bow; sympathetic strings. Overall length 49cm, overall width 11cm."
