V & A acc. no. 189.1882.\nThis instrument was displayed in the North Hall from before 1978 until 1993 with the label 'Fandur, Caucasus, Georgia, USSR'. Its Museum number indicates that this instrument was acquired from the V&A, and the only description that might be applied to it in Carl Engel's 'Musical Instruments in the South Kensington Museum' (London:1874)  is among the loan instruments on p.309-310: '(143.) REBAB. Persian, Probably of the present century.  The body cut out of a single piece of wood, is rudely ornamented with a pattern which is burnt on it.  The instrument has three strings of catgut, which near the top run through holes, and are fastened at the back to the tuning pegs. This rebab is an exact counterpart of the rebec formerly popular in Western Europe.' However, this is far from being 'an exact counterpart' of the round-bodied rebec, so this connection should perhaps be disregarded (MB 2017-03-28)."
