            "value": "modern saripalka made in 1987, collected by Henry Stobart in Bolivia. Pinkillos made in Vitichi are used over much of the Potosi area. Lawatu pinkillos are played from Christmas and Lent. They are used  in outdoor ensembles and dance music and are accompanied by caja drums; they are played forte using strong overtones 'tara' sometimes producing chords from a single instrument. They are wetted with water or maize beer before being played."

            "value": "Saripalka pinkillu, duct flute. A long, cylindrical wooden pipe, roughly straight but angling slightly downwards in the lower half. The wood has been spilt laterally to carve out the bore, the two halves bound with bands of ox tendon in twelve places including between each finger hole. Six large, round finger holes arranged in two groups of three towards the distal end. A beak carved at the proximal end, the lower edge of which is cut at an angle but has a short section  at the end where it is parallel with the upper edge. A block of charka-uma wood (Proustia cuneifolia) is inserted which extends slightly from the top of the beak. This protruding section is rectangular in cross section and has a slightly rounded end. A mouth is cut into the front face with an ox tendon band forming its upper edge. It meets the bore in a square shape and has a long chamfered lower edge, which  meets the surface at a curve."

            "value": "This saripalka was collected in 1987 by Henry Stobart during a research visit to the Potosi region of Southern Bolivia. Stobart suggests two possible derivations for the instrument's name, the first that it is named after a dance, the second that it is named after the village of Saripalka, near Toropalka in the Potosi region. The history of the village lends weight to this argument, as it was traditionally the place where the melodies for carnival were collected, with representatives from other villages visiting annually to learn the melodies for the coming celebrations. The saripalka is played with the malichu (M24f-1987 is an example of this instrument), both of which are duct flutes of similar design. The malichu is half the length of the saripalka and plays an octave higher, always playing the same line in parallel octaves. The saripalka and malichu are only played during the rainy season, between Christmas and carnival, and the instruments themselves must be wetted before use in order to function at their best."
