Notes on a conversation with Dr. Carl Dolmetsch on 13 November 1987, the occasion of his presenting the recorder to the museum: The instrument was designed by Dolmetsch in 1945. The firm of Insulators Ltd. of Edmonton made the tools to produce it and moulded it. 'Dolonite', a special type of bakelite, was recommended for the instruments by Mr Brierley of I.C.I. Around 1970 the firm ceased using dolonite for these instruments and changed to ABS material. Boosey & Hawkes were the distributors for these instruments for many years."

            "value": "During the early music revival of the 20th century, the recorder experienced a meteoric rise in popularity. The introduction of new synthetic materials allowed cheaper and faster production, leading directly to the recorder's widespread use for teaching music in schools.\n   The firm founded by Arnold Dolmetsch spearheaded this revival, first by hand-making wooden reproduction instruments for professional and serious amateur use, and then by developing a musically credible model made from Dolonite\u00a9, a plastic akin to Bakelite.  This is the first Dolonite\u00a9 recorder made by Arnold Dolmetsch Ltd."
