            "value": "gaku biwa. Flat-backed lute. Ascribed to Tokukuni Mataeimon Shigemasa. Japan 18th or 19th century. The back of type of rosewood? The tripartite construction of the table and back are traditional and both components are probably original. There is a trace of a circle near the edge of the protective leather band on the table, this is normally a metal fixture, and is a symbol of the moon. The varnish on the table is not original; the table of the biwa is almost never varnished. Both this instrument and M25-1994 (chikuzen biwa) were probably varnished by the same hand, since the varnish is of the same colour. The restoration of the instrument is very poor, with plastic infill. Overall length: 890mm. The above information was supplied by Sumi Gunji, Professor Emeritus, Kunitachi College of Music, 5-5-1 Kashiwa-cho, Tachikawa-shi, 190 Tokyo, Japan who visited the Dreadnought building on 29 November 1996. The instrumnet was purchased in Sotheby's sale of Musical Instruments, 17 November 1996. Sotheby's catalogue description: Ascribed to TOKUKUNI MATAEIMON SHIGEMASA A BIWA, possibly a GAKU-BIWA (SHORT-NECKED LUTE). Japan. The pear-shaped body in three sections, the table of oak, probably later, traversed by a sharkskin band (bachimen) stained green and pierced by two crescent-shaped sound holes, four wooden frets, the reflex pegbox terminating in a simple pentangular finial, four strings tuned from large fluted pegs. Length: 35 in, 89 cm. Sold with a photograph of the interior of the back which bears an inscription giving the name of the maker to whom this instrument is attributed and a restorer's inscription. \u00a3300-500"
