            "value": "Measurements & pictures & notes on Horniman instrument M265-1996; Rock Chidley English Concertina No 1410 - Wednesday 21st June 2008. The instrument was viewed at the Horniman Study Centre, Greenwich under the supervision of Gavin Dixon. The instrument is a hexagonal 48 key English system concertina with a simple foliate fretwork.  A tracing was attempted of the Right hand end, but this was almost impossible due to the dark colour of the wood not showing through the paper.  A better tracing was taken from a photograph of the end plate. The fretted ends are in a dark wood \u2013 (rosewood?) whereas the framing to the action plates is in a lighter wood (mahogany?). The sides of the hexagon measure 3 9\/16\u201d. The right hand fretted end was removed (the left hand end is quite damaged with pieces missing and deemed too fragile to remove).  All of the end bolts unscrewed easily with no sticking. The fretted ends were backed with a light wood (pine, spruce?) damper board. There was an inscription \u201cTanburro July\/70\u201d apparently in biro on the push side of the Left hand reed pan visible through the bellows. The key pads are a conventional sandwich of leather facing, felt inner, card backing with a leather samper and leather grommet at the lever attachment.  Pad diameter is 10.75mm. The buttons are a mixture of white bone and coloured (red, black) bone, with the note values stamped on the buttons. The buttons have conventional felt lever bushings and three circular key end bushings. The button diameters were measured using vernier callipers as 4.5 mm dia. with the holes (unbushed) as 4.75mm dia. The action is a trunnioned lever style with levers made from plate brass and very fine (almost needle sharp) drawn ends where they pass through the keys.  The grommetted ends have very little thread to them.  The trunnions latch under a hooked brass post which is push fitted into the action plate. The reeds appear to be nickel with a colouration somewhat between brass and steel.  There was no evidence of corrosion. A number of the reeds have dots punched into them next to the note value.  There does not appear to be any logic to this punching; 15 reeds in total have it, 4 on the push side (G, C, A, G#) and 11 on the draw side D, G, A, A#, D#, Eb, E, Bb, B, F, F#). A full test of instrument sound and pitch was not possible owing to the fragile state of the bellows, the loosely attached thumbstraps and the fragile end plates, however it appears to be in old pitch, A=452."
