The pipes are bound together with a strip of bamboo bark.  It is wrapped around the outside twice and secured by lengths of white and purple cord, which passes between the pipes and around the bark strip. All the pipes in the rank that are furthest from the player are open, and produce harmonic effects when they are blown simultaneously with the front rank. These panpipes are played with another set of chuli panpipes (Museum no. M26-1990), 'hocket' - style, with the two pipers playing alternate notes."
