Inventor of Azuma-ryu nigen-kin in 1870s was Tosha Rosen (Grove). Prof. Sumi Guji's reading of the inscription on 29\/11\/96 gave the following: Maker: 'Kashiwa ya Takugi Asakusa ward'. M29a-1994: Wooden box containing plectrum (diagonally truncated ivory tube) for right index finger and cylindrical ivory slide for left middle finger, and two bridges lacquered black. M29b: Collapsible wooden stand overall length 909mm. M29c: rectangular wooden box containing a & b. Purchased Sotheby's sale of musical instruments, 17 November 1994, Lot 133."

There are thirty-one position markers, mostly of brass bars or studs, but also including eight coral studs. The two strings pass over arched wooden  bridges lacquered black and are tuned from fluted horn pegs set in metal-bushed holes. A stamped inscription in Japanese gives the name of the maker: Kashiwa ya Takugi and the location of manufacture: Asakusa Ward. The instrument has a collapsible wooden stand and a box containing an ivory plectrum (tsume) for the right index finger, and a tubular ivory slide operated by the left hand."
