            "value": "Trumpet mutes, some made by Boosey and Co. at Marble Arch, others by Hawkes and Son at Edgware in the 1920s, shortly before the companies merged. Mutes are inserted into the bell (the flared end) of brass instruments and have the effect of modifying the tone colour. Until the start of the 20th century, only the straight mute (bottom of picture) was in common use. Many developments in mute design in the 1920s were inspired by the unusual playing techniques of early jazz performers. One influential figure was Joe 'King' Oliver who often played with a kazoo in the bell of his instrument. London instrument makers responded with the 'Kazoo' mute (top) that was designed to imitate this effect."
