The shell is constructed of iron plates. Eight bands of iron plates, rivited together. Bands are of uneven width, and each is made from multiple plates. Some plates have red or blue colouration, suggesting recycling and corrosion. The bottom of the dome terminates is a shallow point with a small hole. A skin covers the plates around this point. Small round plates are attached to either side of the body with large iron ringlet attached. These connect to a twisted rope carrying strap. The strap is covered with plaited fabric along its central section. Skin is tensioned with twisted hide straps, which meet at a ring around the bottom. Similar hide is sewn around the edge of the skin. A pointed wooden stick, approx 195 mm long, is threaded through the hide straps near the skin. The dancers wear jingling pellet bells on their ankles.\nA group of 12 dancers and musicians from the Purulia area of West Bengal, performing Purulia Chhau dances, and a group of 7 dancers and musicians from the Seraikella area of Bihar, performing Seraikella Chhau dances, toured England between the 4th and 15th October 1985. The leader of the Purulia group was Jagru Mahato.\nOn the 16th October a video recording of three dances was made at the Curtain Theatre, 26 Commercial Street, E1; the cameraman was Clive Izzard from the British Library. Three dances were performed:\nSita Vivaha (The marriage of Sita \u2013 episode from the Ramayana) \u2013 Purulia Chhau\nMayur (The Peacock) \u2013 Seraikella Chhau (solo dance)\nRatri (The Night) \u2013 Seraikella Chhau (solo dance)\nThe Horniman Museum holds joint copyright on the video with Arts Worldwide (PO Box 119, London, N5), the organisation which brought the Chhau group to the UK. Arts Worldwide\u2019s consultant and artistic director is Anne Hunt.
