            "value": "Swanee whistle, duct flute. Cylindrical wooden body lined with brass. The proximal end has a beak with a flat lower edge  and a  chamfered upper rim with a lateral grove for the upper teeth. The beak houses a wooden block, which is also contained within the brass lining and which forms a crescent-shaped duct. The mouth is formed by two straight cuts into the wood, the upper perpendicular to the plane of the body, the lower angled downwards. The distal end has a brass end cap with two decorative lateral grooves near its top rim. The end cap has a circular hole at its centre, from which protrudes a metal handle. The handle is a narrow cylindrical rod with two bends, the first a right angle, the second obtuse. The handle ends in a slightly wider disk. Inside the bore of the instrument, the handle connects to movable plunger that adjusts the pitch. The front of the body is stamped: PICCOLO\/SWANEE\/WHISTLE\/REGISTERED\/MADE IN\/LONDON\/ENGLAND\/REG. U.S. PATENT OFF."

Whilst blowing, the hand-operated piston is used to produce glissandi (sliding pitches). This aspect means that the instrument is commonly used to provide sound effects, and most usually for denoting rapidly ascending or falling objects, for example in animated cartoons. To fans of 1970s BBC children's television, the instrument will always be associated with the voices of the 'Clangers'.
