            "value": "Modern bass trombone made by Yamaha. At the start of the 20th century, the bass trombone commonly used in London's orchestras and bands had narrow tubing and was pitched in G. From the 1950s onwards, London orchestral players moved to the B flat instrument, which has wider tubing and a rounder tone. However, it is also shorter, and valve sections are required to reach the lowest notes (these are at the top of the picture). Although more versatile than its predecessor, the modern instrument is generally considered to have a less distinctive sound. For this reason, band players were initially reluctant to make the change, and the modern instrument was only adopted by brass and military bands in the 1970s."
