            "value": "This improvisation on a shepherd\u2019s tune was recorded in a village near Knin, Dalmatia, Croatia. It is played on a double duct flute, dvojnice, which has a similar arrangement of fingerholes to the instrument on display: three for the left-hand flute and four for the right. The semi-nomadic life of shepherds led to contact with musical traditions outside Croatia, as is reflected in this track. The deep guttural drone note that issues from the flautist\u2019s throat is also heard in Romanian and Turkish traditional music."

The right hand pipe (from the player\u2019s perspective) has four finger holes and the left three. These are positioned in scalloped recesses. Approximately half way down the instrument, the pipes divide and are angled slightly outwards. A narrow stay reconnects the pipes close to the distal end. The chamfer on the side edges of the upper section is deep, reaching the sides of the mouths and creating angled faces of the same size as the vertical side faces. Where the pipes divide, their inside edges have the same chamfer, making the cross section of each pipe nominally octagonal. Almost the whole instrument is decorated with carved patterns. There are also designs in silver paint on the top surface of the beak, below the mouths and round the lower rims. Inscribed: SARAJEVO\/Yugoslavia"

            "value": "The dvojnice is associated with folk music cultures of the Balkans. Its ability to play an independent melody on each pipe allows it to imitate polyphonic vocal styles, with each pipe representing an individual singing voice. The number of holes on the two pipes varies between regions. This Bosnian example has four holes on the right pipe and three on the left, but in Herzegovina it is more traditional to have four holes on the right pipe and three on the left."
