Traditionally, each young man adopts a personal melody to play on his flute, a call sign to attract the attention of the woman he wants to marry. This example was made by Sal Hernandez in 1991, who provided information about the wood used. He also said that most of the flutes he sold were bought by Sioux Native Americans."

Maker: Sal Hernandez, Vermillion, South Dakota 57069, USA. This flute was made in 1991. Vendor. W.H. Over Museum Gift Shop, Vermillion, South Dakota 57069, USA. US $80.00 + $4.80 tax. Stylised poker-work signature 'Sal H' Redwood (maker's identification of the wood), cylindrical bore, five fingerholes, two vent holes at the distal end. Conical mouth hole, the upper and lower section of the bore divided by a wooden plug. Brass plate round two holes channelling the air column out of the top section of the flute and into the lower section, wooden block tied above the lip with a length of rawhide. A length of deer hair isattached to the block, symbolising strength. Sal Hernandez was born in Mexico in 1951 and came to the USA in 1979. Most ofthe purchasers of his flutes are Sioux Indians. Overall length: 553 mm, Overall diameter: 31 mm. Couting flute used by young Sioux men. Each young man would adopt a melody as his personal call sign and play it on the flute to attract the attention of the woman that he wanted to marry."

Inside the beak, the upper and lower sections of the bore are divided by a wooden plug. The mouth is positioned on a flat platform on the top surface and is surrounded by a rectangular metal plate. Above the mouth, a rectangular block with chamfered edges is mounted on top of the plate, and the assembly is tied to the pipe with a length of rawhide. A bunch of white deer hair protrudes downwards from a notch in the block and covers the mouth. Six finger holes and two vent holes, which are near the lower rim at the front and back, all burnt out. The maker, Sal Hernandez, has signed the instrument with a pokerwork signature: Sal H"
