            "value": "Handbell used in Tibetan Buddhist ritual. Cup-shaped, brass clapper bell, with sides flared towards the rim. The exterior of the cup decorated with bands of symbolic designs round the principal axis: 7 syllables in Lantsa (?) script, one repeated twice; a band of horizontal ritual sceptres; 16 law wheel symbols enclosed within lotus (?) flowers; a band of vertical ritual sceptres round the bell mouth. Jointed handle, with inscription in Chinese, surmounted by a crowned head and a five-pronged half-sceptre. The interior of the bell with three syllable in Lantsa (?) script. Iron clapper suspended by metal rings. Overall height: 312 mm. Diameter of bell mouth: 112 mm. Probably China, made for the Tibetan market C19th or C20th. In most respects this clapper bell conforms to the description of the Tibetan bell 'dril-bu' in the article by Mireille Helffer on p.599 of the New Grove Dictionary of Musical Instruments, although the jointed handle is atypical."
