The soundboard painted by Mabel Dolmetsch in tempera with spring flowers: anemone blanda and pulsatilla, scilla, wallflowers and pink primroses. The motto painted on the underside of the lid: 'Plus fait douceur que violence' (Kindness effects more than violence) is taken from  one of the fables of  Jean de la Fontaine (Book VI (1678-1679), fable 3). A note about the date: gradually it may become possible to fix the date of this instrument with more accuracy. The Dolmetsch clavichord of similar design at Fenton House, numbered 62, is dated 1925; the one at the RAM, numbered 63, is also dated 1925. Even if Dolmetsch were only producing two such instruments per year, this would suggest a date for the Horniman's instrument, numbered 59, in the early 1920's. There is a suggestion that the name batten is a replacement (by ADolmetsch) which allows the player to place the fingers further in to the keys in the manner of modern piano technique. The original name batten would have run straight across the keys and would have had a date on it."
