            "value": "Dulcimer, santur, with case and two beaters. Acquired: E-V&A 779-1876. Persia, 19th century. The instrument takes the form of the usual trapezoid box across which 18 quadruple courses of strings are stretched. The lance-shaped wrest-pins are set into the right-hand wall. Each course has a separate capstan-shaped bridge surmounted by a comb of metal. These are set alternately on the right and left of the soundboard. Two sound holes cut into the shape of flowers. The walls at the front and the back are painted with a frieze of dancers and instrumentalists. The case is intended only to protect the instrument while it is not in use, it is fitted with a sliding panel at the front and not a lid. The top is painted with a scene of a dancer with finger cymbals and a number of instrumentalists. A frieze of soldiers is painted round the sides. The edges of the top are trimmed with large-headed nails. The case is lined with canvas. Inside the front panel is stuck a piece of paper from a book or magazine later than 1870. It consists of part of pages 808 and one other and is divided into four columns referring to a) The Russian national debt in 1870. B) A rabble rouser called Kenealy (perhaps a quotation as the type-face is different. c) A libel action in Paris brought by Gen. Wimpflen and referring to his behaviour in the battle of Sedan. d) Government changes in Prussia. It is printed in English."
