            "value": "Double-membrane barrel drum, probably a tanggu. Two heads nailed to the shell with brass tacks. The shell lacquered black with a design of clouds and dancing cranes painted in gold. Four brass rings mounted on th shell for attachment to carved wooden stand. Height of Drum: 417 mm, Max. diameter  of drum: 540 mm approx. Height of stand: 635 mm. Max. width of stand: 658 mm. Height of drum on stand: 661 mm. For illustration of a taggu drum see A.C. Moule 'List of the musical and other sound-producing instruments of the Chinese' Plate VII, no. 10. This instrument is illustrated in the Horniman handbook \"Musical Instruments\", Plate 6, no.39 where it is described as being Japanese. The V&A documentation cites Japan as its country of origin. The drum was aquired by the V&A from Mr Gibbon of Brockley.  The drum and stand also bear the number \"H.M. 347\". If this were the old H.M. number the new number would be 3962, which occurs in the registers by a \"Rebab, fiddle...Persian\". However, the drum almost certainly came into the Horniman museum collections in 1956 with the bulk of the V&A collections: \"H.M. 347\" is presumably erroneous."

            "value": "Tanggu, double membrane barrel drum. Two inscriptions appear on each membrane. One consists of twenty Chinese characters within a square frame, translation: 'Little east door of the Shang Yang\/Former true Zhou in front of the local temple\/Self made class of the Lan institute\/Entertain guests with the drum instrument'. The other inscription is a column of four Chinese characters within a leaf-shaped frame, translation: 'True Zhou Lan Institute'.  The wooden shell lacquered black with a design of clouds and dancing cranes painted in gold. Four brass rings mounted to the widest part of the body on octagonal domed plates. These engage with hooks on the stand. The four-legged stand is of wood and is formed in a cross shape beneath the drum, with four upright arms that are curved to follow the shape of the body and extend to just beneath the upper membrane. The stand is collapsible; one of the diagonals is rigid, while the other is formed of two separate sections, which are hinged to the two sides of the first at the central axis. The skins are nailed to the body, each with two rows of closely positioned brass tacks."
