[V&A register has mid 19th c.] The number 15.10.48\/218 is written on the instrument, this must be a mistake as that number refers to a flute in the Bull collection. With twelve strings of horse-hair, ten black, and the two longest white, each string consisting of from six to eight hairs. Modern. W. 2 ft., H. 1 ft. 10in. (Bought, Paris Exhibition, 1867, 1l. 8s.) The Ossetes, or Ossetines, are an Indo-Germanic race dwelling in Central Caucasus. The call themselves Ir\u00f4n; Oseti is the name given them by the Georgians, and other neighbouring nations. Their little harp is especially interesting, on account of its resemblance to some instruments of this class represented on monuments of Eastern nations, dating from about a thousand years before the Christian era. The fore pillar, which in our harp serves to resist the tension of the strings, is wanting; and the same was the case with the ancient Oriental harp, and is so still with most harps found in Asiatic countries.'             "value": "Angular harp. The trough-shaped base of the resonator is possibly of maple, and the soundboard is of paler wood. The base of the resonator extends to form a thick bracket that supports a ring-shaped section of wood with a straight wide grain, possibly spruce or pine. It is dovetailed into the neck, a solid piece of wood that is flat in section and gently curved, terminating in a rounded, bifid finial. The twelve gut (originally horsehair) strings are tuned by wooden, round headed pegs that pass laterally through the neck. The strings run through holes in the narrow wooden string-holder, or bridge, that is attached to the soundboard. They are pinned in place with small slips of wood that may act as brays, giving a buzzing sound. The soundboard has 12 small, circular soundholes grouped in pairs on either side of the row of strings, and one at either end of the bridge."
