            "value": "This Pontic lyra was prrobably purchased from John Bodouroglou (or Bodouroglow), American Farm School, P.O.Box 140, Salonica, Greece around 1958, according to information in the Musical Instrument Department history file. Perhaps made c. 1958 (letter in file states 'the man who makes them is asking \u00a35-0-0'). Viewed in the showcase on 13 September 2009 by Matthios Tsahouridis who considered that the type of string-holder it had and the fact that it was produced in Thessaloniki indicated that it was made in the 1920s."

            "value": "LIRA AND BOW. Acquired: Greece. Painted on the back: Kalaidopoulos Spyros \/ Sinikismos 151 \/ Xilina Parapigmata No.2 \/ Salonica Greece. The body is barge-shaped. Body, neck and head carved from one piece of wood. Four holes are cut into the sides. Belly of coarse-grained, thick wood, pieced with 44 small holes and two long-bow shaped sound-holes. Fingerboard is pinned to the neck, the lower end is shaped and pierced. Leaf-shaped pegbox with three knuckle-bone shaped pegs set into it from front to back. Wire strings are threaded through small holes in the head above the red glass nut. Tailpiece is rough and stirrup-shaped and attached to the end of the instrument by copper wire which passes through the end of the body itself. Few signs of wear, fingerboard clean, no scars from a bridge. Bow: a smoothed stick tapered at one end to form the heel and bent at the other to form a point. The hair passes through a hole at the bent end, where it is secured with string. At the other end it is tied with tape and bound to the grip. Tensioned by pressure of the fingers holding the tape. The long slender body of this Pontic lyre (Pontiaki lyra) tapers slightly towards the neck and head, the whole carved from a single piece of wood. The sides pierced by four holes.The table of open grain pine pieced with four small holes and two long serpentine sound holes.The fingerboard is pinned to the neck, the lower end is shaped and pierced.
