The body and the lower part of the neck are covered by a piece of hide that is stitched together to form a tight-fitting cover as well as a soundtable. There are two small soundholes. There is a scratched pattern within a rectangle on the left-hand side of the membrane. The end of each string is wound round the neck, passes over the peg and then runs through the skin soundtable is secured to a string holder of wood that travels the length of the body. The pegs are crudely cut with cylindrical heads. The neck terminates in a finial carved into the shape of a bearded male face with scars and headdress with two horns. A stout cord handle is knotted through the neck just above the sleeve."

            "value": "Bow harp. Acquired: Ex-V & A 690-1858. Niam Niam people, Central Africa. The resonator is shaped like an elongated fiddle with a rounded back. The curved neck is attached to the wall of the body. The body and the lower part of the neck are covered by a piece of hide that is stitched together to form a tight-fitting cover as well as a soundboard. There are two small soundholes. There is some scratched decoration on the left-hand side of the membrane. Five cord string. The end of each string is wound round the neck, passes over the peg and then runs to the body where it passes through the membrane and is secured to a tongue of wood that travels the length of the body. The pegs are crudely cut with cylindrical heads. The neck terminates in a finial in the shaped of a bearded male face with scars and a horned headdress. A stout cord handle is knotted through the neck just above the sleeve. The neck has split in a number of places around the handle and pegs. Case label: Niam Niam People. Congo."
