            "value": "Old number '226' or  '266' may be correct but missing from register;  on p. 79 of Horniman 1898 register there is a note to the effect that old numbers 101-400 are missing. Similar example in the collection of the V&A (IM.238-1922) originates from Sipri in Gwalior. A similar instrument, 1994.498 in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum, is described as a 'Pandharpuri tambura' (presumably from Pandharpur, in Solapur, Maharashtra state), although this is said to have a gourd rather than a carved wooden back. Another similar instrument (with a wooden back) at the Victoria and Albert Museum IM238-1922 is described as  'Possibly South India; acquired in Pune, Maharashtra, or Shivpuri, near Gwalior'. A similar instrument in the collection of the Cit\u00e9 de la Musique Philharmonie de Paris (Museum number E.2000.32.6) is described as originating from Shivpuri, and having a one-piece back of jack tree wood  (Artocarpus heterophyllus)."

            "value": "Tamb\u016br\u0101, long-necked drone lute of wood. The fluted hemispherical back carved with thirty-two ribs in relief. The shoulder is inlaid with fifteen tapering ivory fillets.  The table with nine pin-hole soundholes, each one of approximately 1mm. diameter, at the centre and two pairs of three approximately 80mm from the base of the neck.  The table with painted representations of Ga\u1e47e\u015ba (Ganesha), flanked by two peacocks,  and with two bandicoots, his mounts. The god Rama fanned by Hanuman, his consort Sita fanned by Lakshmana, and two cows are also depicted. The front of the hollow neck and integral head is painted with a repeat pattern of flowers, and is nailed to the sides. The back of the neck is painted with musicians, and acrobats performing on a rope.The base of the shoulder, the back, table, head and neck are edged with an ivory border. The top of the head is faced with an ivory panel with a central hole. Two lateral and two frontal spatulate rosewood pegs for wire strings running through four holes in an ivory string-guide. Bench-shaped wooden bridge. Four bone tuning beads below the bridge. The inferior stringholder is a ridged wooden block, faced with ivory and attached to the base of the instrument. It is reinforced with a lobed panel of ivory that is nailed to the base of the resonator."
