            "value": "Wot. Set of nine pipes grouped around a larger piece of bamboo and bound into a cylinder, with the bottom end partially stopped with a beeswax mixture. It was made by Song Sak Prathumsia in 1989, in Roiet Province, Thailand. [SEPERATE SHEET] Purchased from a Lao group from North East Thailand giving a concert in the Purcell Room. 13.3.89 (instrument bought from group's manager J. Gomez of 25 Cantelowes Rd. London NW1.) Instrument made in 1989 by Mr Song Sak Prathumsin, a teacher in Roiet Province Drama College, NE Thailand, who played the wot, the jew's harp and the xylophone during the concert at the Purcell Room. A bundle of nine stopped pipes cut from lengths of bamboo, each with a beeswax stopper at the distal end. A length of bamboo in the centre of the bundle acts as a core around which the ten stopped pipes are assembled \"with mutual lateral contact between each pipe and its neighbour on either side; and the wall of the core has been cut away, so that the margin of the cut follows the spiral lovus on which the stopped ends of the pipes temninate\". \"The pipes are luted together, and to the central core, in a mass of blackened beeswax...At the proximal end the wax mass is shaped into a cone, the apex of which extends forward of the exposed rims of the open ends of the pipes\" at a distance of approximately 2.5 cm. The pipes are fixed with beeswax down thier lengths. Threads of yellow fibre (silk?) near the proximal ends of the stopped pipes also appear to bind them. The tops of the stopped pipes are bevelled. New and in good condition. Some fibres are clinging to the top of the wax cone. Overall length: 25.2 cm, overall width: 4.5 cm. Longest stopped pipe - length: 14.4 cm, diameter: 12 mm. Shortest stopped pipe - length 1.4 cm, diameter: 9 cm. Two similar sets of panpipes are in the collections of the Pitt Rivers museum, Oxford - PRM 1916.10.13 and 1938.34.139. In these examples, which are from Burma, the middle pipe is filled with gunpowder, they function as aeolian \"rochet\" panpipes. They are set off at festivals."

            "value": "This set of wot panpipes was purchased from a group of Lao musicians from North East Thailand who performed at the Purcell Room in London in 1989. They were made by one of the performers, Mr Song Sak Prathumsin, who also played the jew\u2019s harp and xylophone in the performance.  In performance the apex of the beeswax cone surmounting the pipes rests on top of the chin, and the player rotates the instrument to direct his breath against the edge of the pipe that he wishes to play."
