            "value": "Nikolaus Stolle is working on a publication for 2015 which will feature NNs 11410, 11 and 12. The Horniman dolls are part of a group which Nikolaus estimates is spread between 15 collections in the UK, the USA, Canada, France and Germany (not all the collections have dolls, sometimes just the cases for the dolls, apparently the Horniman examples are in particularly good condition). The dolls all appear to have been manufactured in the latter half of the eighteenth century by Ursuline nuns, most probably in Qubec Convent. The dolls represent Christianised indigenous North Americans who were living along the lower St Lawrence river, but individual groups have not yet been identified. The dolls were made by the nuns for sale, particularly to army officers.  It appears that one of the first dolls was sent to Chartres where the mother Ursuline convent was located. Crowley, Tom 2014-10-29.\n\n\nThe dolls head should be datable by an expert at the Museum of Childhood. Oberholzer\u2019s publications on Cree dolls in AIAM should be checked; this is a good early Subarctic model, and may be c 1780-1870. King, Jonathan; 2013."
